Wimbledon managed to hold on to a first half lead to complete a double of wins this season over Combe despite strong home team second half fight back.
Three converted tries in the first half were enough to secure the win for the visitors. Wimbledon had very much the better of the opening exchanges pinning the Goddington Dene side in their own half. Flanker Josh Stace got Wimbledon’s first after concerted pressure in the home 22 and some fierce close quarters exchanges. A swift strike down the right and a neat exchange of passes saw centre Paul Hendry score after 14 minutes. Finally a driving maul from a line-out ended in a try for Devlin Hope. Stand-off Ed Morgan converted all three scores to give the visitors a well-deserved lead of 21-0 at the whistle.
Combe had to score next to have any chance and Kieran Thompson scored out wide after 5 minutes to narrow the gap to 5-21. The difficult kick went wide. The match was in stalemate with the Wimbledon defence standing firm.
It remained this way until the final minutes when Combe struck twice in an effort to salvage the game. Nick Cook scored after three surges on the Wimbledon line and Nathan Wyman kicked the extras. With only a couple of minutes to go Matt Harrison touched down after a break by Combe player of the match Kyan Braithwaite to make it 17-21.
A final effort from Combe just failed with a knock on and Wimbledon ran out winners.
A disappointment for Westcombe Park despite another losing bonus point. The team will need to be on their mettle when they travel to the South coast to play Worthing this coming Saturday.
