Dorking RFC 45-23 Westcombe Park RFC

John Vallely18 Feb - 09:42

Combe’s winning run terminated by a strong Dorking display

All good things come to an end and Westcombe Park experienced this truth on the road at Dorking. The home side put in a powerful display scoring seven tries to Combe’s three and effectively outmanoeuvring a physical visiting effort.

Westcombe Park started strongly in defence and after 15 minutes the boot of Nathan Wyman had given the visitors a six-point lead when Dorking were penalised first for offside and then a high tackle. The lead only lasted a minute or so, Dorking’s Callum Watson scoring a couple of phases out from driven line-out ball. On 28 minutes the gap extended to eight points Dorking scored under the posts a jinking run breaching the defence. Right on the half-time whistle that lead moved to 19-6 when stand-off Tom Hardwick scored out wide.

Combe needed to exploit their physicality at the breakdown, but it was the home side that struck first almost immediately Tom Bloomer finishing off a territory gobbling break to make it 26-6. Dorking then moved out of sight on 45 minutes when a driven line-out produced a try which, with the successful conversion, made it 33-6.

The visitors’ heads could have dropped but Westcombe Park hit back when a strong run from Leo Jowett delivered a try in the corner. Nick Cook then scored a trademark try bursting through the defence after a line-out. A second Callum Watson try maintained a healthy gap for Dorking at 38-18 and while a second Cook try raised the chance of a potential bonus point for Combe, a seventh Dorking try on 75 minutes extinguished any faint hopes.

A weekend off beckons before the visit to Goddington Dene of league leaders Tonbridge Juddians. Another challenge for Combe.
